Music Video History

First steps towards the making of first music video was back in 1894 when George Thomas electrician was hired to promote song called The Little Lost Chiled using magic lanterns which is one of the first projectors. This then led to creation of Bessie Smith-St.Louis blues in 1929. This is earliest example of music video which was only shown in theaters.

Moving on to mid 1940's :

Music videos started to become more common with new twist to them for example short dancing or little other types of entertainment. Some examples are Hollywood Boogie- Thelma White (1946) and Solid Potato Salad (1944) where most women are dancing and singing.

Moving on to late 1950's:

The scopitone jukebox was developed allowing artits such as Serge Gainsbourge and Jacques Brel to acomany their song using this new device. Manny Pattison began pre-recording the music audio and then went out and shot lots of different shots that then she lip sinced over to create new type of entertainment.

1960's

Moving to 1960-70's

Promotional clips started to become more popular thorough the use of music videos

Beatles started to make their first promotional music videos in 1965, known as filmed inserts.

Day tripper and We can work it out was realesed by Beatles as first promo batch videos

Moving to 1974 and onwards

Developent of Tv and music video became much greater in 1974 as music videos came on Tv. Lots of rock bands and other artist started to employ people to make promotiona music videos for them and their new albums.

David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" became the first music video to have a production cost over $500,000 (1980)

1981 MTV was launched in USA. Airing Video Killed Radio Star which marked the bigining of 24/7 Music video on television.

1992-2004 MTV started to list directors and artist is song credits. This showed acknowledgement

Michael Jackson thriller that came out in 1982 as short film changed the music video

2005 Youtube came around. This developent allowed people to search and rewatch popular videos online very easily.
