Intertextuality

Intertextuality in music video

Intertextuality is the shaping of media text by another text. Intertextuality is a device that creates inter-relationships between media texts.

In the music video 'la la la' by Naughty Boy. The whole video has lots of intertextuality mostly referring to the book 'The Wizard of Oz'.

The 3 main characters are the intertextual link between the book and the music video we know that these characters are from the book because thats the way we decode media text.

In the music video "without me" by Eminem there are lots of different intertextual references to lots of on going problems at the time when music video was released.

Eminem himself is making these problems seem funy and fine in society as thats the type of charecter he is and he shows it through this intertextuality. He at times uses these videos to create a satirical response to the events within the world.

By looking at these intertextual references within these two examples, I have established that intertextual references are important in music videos because it allows the people who consume media to be more interactive and more likely to enjoy it because they recognise and decode the visual devices they see in the music videos. So because of this we are planing to incorporate intertextuality into our music video, we will cover this in more detail in a planing post later.
